Cultural Exchange Component

The Au Pair program provides participants the opportunity to learn about US society and culture outside of their placement.  It creates an environment for the Au Pair to share their own culture, traditions and views with Americans.  These opportunities help everyone to see the world from another perspective.  All participants – Au Pair, Host Family and the children – learn to be more tolerant and respectful of differences and to appreciate similarities that bring us all together.  Through this cultural exchange, everyone learns to break down prejudices and misunderstandings, and in the end strengthen and grow relationships between Americans and the rest of the world.  By bringing people of different cultures together, sharing values, cultures, and experiences we strengthen our national security and promote prosperity in the US and across the world.

Cultural Exchange activities provide critical exchanges and interactions which are the central reasons for the Exchange Visitor Program.   Through the Au Pair program we have an opportunity to share pieces of our daily lives that we often take for granted, something as simple as walk around the block.  With the Au Pair program, Host Families rediscover their community and are proud to share traditions which brings a true richness to their children’s daily lives.  Host Families often have a new appreciation for how their home town has  impacted the growth of America.  At the same time, the Host Family will be learning how their Au Pair’s country as impacted the growth of the world.

Au Pair Foundation engages participants in many Cultural Exchange activities throughout the year, including the Family Day Conference and the Education Component.  The Family Day Conference activities expose Au Pairs and their Host Families to learn more about each  other’s culture.  Events may be participation in local sports, state fairs, or community festivals.  Our participants are introduced to their community so that they can participate in local venues, such as community plays or musical events.  Everyone throughout the world loves to express themselves through food, including sharing cultures through culinary events, tailgating, block parties and community food festivals.  Each community offers a one of a kind, unique perspective on the American culture and on American history.  It is through participating in these events that Au Pairs can enhance their learning about our great country.

The Au Pair program’s Education Component requires that Au Pair’s complete the requisite amount of education during their Au Pair year.  The Education Component is a great way for Au Pair’s to learn more about the community around them through school.  Au Pairs will meet other students in their peer group who are from the US and from other parts of the world.  It is a great opportunity to learn a new subject and a new education system, while meeting like-minded peers.  It is a culturally and educationally enriching part of the Au Pair program.
